I am very happy to say that it is evident that I passed on my love for music down to my three little boys. It probably would have been impossible for this not to happen considering they were all exposed to it before they were even born.
I have never bought those kid type of cd's for them. They have always listened to what I listen to on the radio. In the tradition of my father, I started training them early on who sings what song. It is my job as their mother to raise them right, don't you think?
My Oldest Son:
This boy just knows his music, flat out! Even at a young preschool age, he would sit in the back of the truck singing along with every song. It always amazed me how he seemed to know the word to every song at such a young age. He constantly tells me how he is a country boy and cannot understand why not all of his friends don't love country music as much as he does. Turn a little bluegrass on and this kid is in heaven!
Just yesterday, we took a trip to the grocery store. There is an intersection where I lose reception to most of my radio stations for a moment as I approach the mountain. "Take The Money And Run" by the Steve Miller Band had just come one. I changed the station because I knew we were about to lose it (nothing against the Steve Miller Band of course!) My big 9 year old said "OOOH, OOOH, Don't change that mom, that is a GOOD song!" See what I mean? He knows the good old stuff! Then, on the way home from the grocery store, he was jamming out to some Guns 'N Roses. That's my boy!
My Middle Son:
Although he is only 4 years old, this little guy is trying to be 2nd in command of the radio (big brother is still 1st in command of course). I hate commercials so I constantly change the stations around while driving. Little guy will pipe up from the backseat "Mom, that was a good song, put it back!". Just wonderful. Now I have 2 backseat radio controllers. Can I listen to what I want anymore? Umm, no!
My middle man is always humming some kind of tune. Fairly often, I will hear him singing a few lines and then I realize they are the lyrics to a popular song out right now. He made me very proud recently when we were on vacation. There was karaoke set up at an outside party we held and he got right up there and sang his ABC's! What do you know, he got a standing ovation!
My Youngest Son:
My "baby"will just turn 2 next month but he might turn out to be my most rocking dude of all! I often glance back at him in his car seat and literally see him head banging to the music. When he sees me looking at him, he will crack up and go right back to his jamming. He is starting to sing now too and lights up whenever I turn on some music. I often use music to settle down a tantrum and it works like a charm!
"Baby D" has been with me when I have listened to some new music for the music reviews. We sit and listen together and he starts acting like a little drummer boy. They say that music can calm the savage beast and in this case, I can vouch for that!
(Sidenote: In addition to raising them up right musically, I also teach them other things like good manners, healthy habits, etc.. blah, blah
)

Love it! I thought that I created "who's on the radio?" I have always played it with my three. It started with my oldest (she is now 24 and married to a musician) to keep her occupied in the car. My other two followed in her footsteps. All three of them love music of all kinds. I think that the youngest is the most musical. While pregnant with him I worked about 1-1/2 hours away from the house. So to keep me occupied on the long drive to work, I would jam to the radio or cd's.
LOL maybe we should come up with a mass produced game of "who's on the radio" =)
It's great to hear that your love for music has carried on.
My parents are not musical but when I showed a flare for it they encouraged me.
Now I have kids and I try to get them into musc as qucikly as possible. If they want to learn an instrument then the earlier the better I say!
Mandy: Great idea! Let's start thinking about we how can get that started :)
Olly: Absolutely! Getting kids started on their interests at an early age is definitely the way to go.
Heck, that reminds me when my two girls were little. I remember one's favorite was Heartlight (or something like that) by Niel Diamond & I thought that there was NO hope for here.
Make that HER.
Hello anonymous. I think you are one anonymous commenter that I am going to like :) I remember that song Heartlight....unfortunately. My family was on a camping trip and there was a ferry boat that gave tours on the lake. The boat would pass our campsite multiple times daily. Each and EVERY time that ferry passed us, it had that song on. I quickly grew to dislike it. I bet she turned out to love all the good music in the end :)
Good for you, bringing your boys up to love good old rock music. My son, who's 28 now, knows all the words to every REO Speedwagon and Styx song out there. We played those a lot when the boys were younger, and I guess it must have been too much...rofl.
