I got my first request! Jeff Baker asked to hear my thoughts on the song "Shattered" by O.A.R.. I replied to him that it is interesting he brought this song up because the song intrigued me as well.
Jeff wrote an in depth analysis of the meaning of the lyrics to "Shattered" in his post titled "Is It A Love Song?". I strongly urge you to go read his post. I feel that he pegged the meaning of this song dead on. I will add my thoughts about the song now, so come back here to read them after you visit Jeff's post.
To me, this song is about a bad and unhealthy relationship. I agree with Jeff that it is not about love. It is about uncertainty and fear. The relationship provides a security blanket for him. He knows what to expect from it and to him, that is better than the unknown.
While he realizes that he is better off without the relationship, he allows himself to go back to it because it has become his safety net. He longs to try life on his own and let himself discover healthier and happier relationships. However, his need for something familiar drives him back to where he should not be. Quite possibly, it is even a form of self punishment for subconscious feelings of guilt.
The overall theme of "Shattered" reminds me of another song. This song is a little darker but I think it is related to the concept. It is called "Cover Me" by Candelbox. In this song, he basically loathes his partner but uses her for "shelter from the storm". Unfortunately, I think there are far too many relationships just like that.
What are your thoughts on the song? Jeff mentioned that a lot of people disagreed with his thoughts and that they DO think it is a love song (in a positive way). Please comment with your analysis of "Shattered".

I once met a girl in Florida when I was 25. She was only 18. I spent the next 6 months with her. My God; She was the most beautiful girl I have ever been with but that was the problem. She was a girl not a woman.
She would manipulate me with her beauty and get anything she wanted. I was truly her slave. I knew that this was not a healthy relationship but I was drawn to her.
I automatically thought of her when I watched the video and felt that feeling of being powerless and smothered.
I tried so hard to end the relationship but finding myself in complete surrender. How powerful of a song is this that I would be taken back so long ago.
This is the first time ever hearing this song but I can tell you this much. This is not a love song, Very Cool!!!
I cany hear a thing and my volume is up!
I never bothered to follow this band and probably still won't, but there is no neglecting the fact that "shattered" is a well written song w/ good melodies and a solid hook.
I hyped it on Everhype and scored it 81% which I think is fairly accurate.

I wouldn't mind getting some opinions on it . If you get on there, rate me a 5 & request friendship.
i dont know but the video is pretty tight
I totally agree with Jeff. when i was listening to this song i knew right away that it wasn't a love song. I mean is as though he is trying to get away from that relationship but he decides to stick with it. He wants to let go, but he is broken inside, in this song he is recognizing how this relationship is hurting him. is like he sees the negative of the relationship and needs a brake, but somehow he can't.
I like this song. because at the end we can see that he made up his mind and decided to walk away.
its a way to clear his thoughts and see whats what really matters.
Well those are my thoughts
i might be wrong
but that's how I see it.
Favorite quote " All that i feel is the realness I'm faking taking my time but its time that I'm wasting" Gotta love it :)
